FAQ
01What is EUIPO?
02What is the benefit of registering a trademark with EUIPO?
Registering a trademark with EUIPO offers unitary protection across all 27 member states of the European Union. This simplifies the administrative process and reduces costs, as the owner does not need to register the trademark separately in each country.
03What types of trademarks can be registered with EUIPO?
EUIPO accepts several types of trademarks, including: verbal trademarks (words, letter or number combinations), figurative trademarks (images, logos or designs with or without text), three-dimensional trademarks (shape of products or packaging), sound trademarks (audio representations), multimedia trademarks, motion trademarks, and hologram trademarks (to cover modern innovations).
04How long does the registration process take?
The standard process takes between 4 and 6 months but may be extended if oppositions, clarification requests or other complications arise. TAS Agency ensures that the risk of delays is minimized. The process involves a formal examination, a publication period for opposition, and, finally, registration.
05What rights does an EU trademark offer?
An EU trademark grants the owner exclusive rights, including: the right to prohibit third parties from using the trademark without consent, the right to initiate legal action against counterfeiting or abusive use, and the possibility to license or transfer the rights to the trademark.
06How long is an EU trademark valid?
07Can I modify a trademark that is already registered?
A registered trademark is protected exactly as it was accepted and published by EUIPO. Therefore, substantial modifications that may affect the essential elements of the trademark—such as changing the design or logo, or adding or removing elements—are not allowed. However, administrative information, such as the owner’s name, address, or legal representative, can be updated.
