FAQ
01What is an industrial design?
An industrial design represents the visual appearance of a product. It may include features such as lines, contours, colours, shape, texture and materials. Designs protect the aesthetic aspect of a product, not its technical or functional features.
02Why is registering an industrial design important?
Registering an industrial design grants the owner exclusive rights to use the design and to prevent others from copying or reproducing it without permission. Protection encourages innovation and helps companies safeguard their visual identity.
03 How can you help me with industrial design registration?
TAS Agency manages all stages of the industrial design registration process, including eligibility verification, preparation of documentation, filing the application with the chosen office (national, regional or international), and handling post-filing procedures such as responding to objections and renewing protection. We ensure that you obtain rapid protection and that it is maintained over the long term.
04Where can an industrial design be registered?
Registration can be carried out at the national level (OSIM), at the regional level (for example, EUIPO for EU designs), or at the international level through WIPO using the Hague System.
05What are the requirements for registering a design?
The design must be new and have individual character. Novelty means the design was not made public before filing, while individual character means its overall impression is sufficiently different from existing designs.
06What types of products can be protected through designs?
In general, any industrial or handcrafted product can be protected, including furniture, packaging, jewelry, vehicles, electronic equipment, textiles, and even component parts visible during normal use.
07How long does design protection last?
The initial protection period varies by jurisdiction, usually 5 years. It can be renewed in successive five-year periods, up to a maximum of 25 years. We provide efficient renewal solutions for all jurisdictions.
08Can a design be modified after it has been registered?
Major changes affecting the appearance of the design are not allowed because protection applies to the design exactly as registered. However, administrative updates—such as changes of owner, address, or legal representative—can be made through a formal request to the issuing authority.
09What happens if my design is copied?
You can initiate legal action against the infringer to stop unauthorized use and claim financial damages. These actions must be brought in the countries where the design is protected.
10We offer full consultancy and support throughout the entire process.
Designs protect the visual appearance of a product, while patents protect technical or functional solutions. For example, a phone can be protected by both a design (appearance) and a patent (technology).
