One of the most common questions we get from entrepreneurs is, “How much does it cost me to register my trademark?”
The answer depends on several factors (brand type, number of classes, logo color, where you register it), but in 2026 there is one element that makes a major difference: the SME Fund, which can reduce costs by up to 75%.
In this article we show you the real figures, so that you can clearly see the difference between the standard version and the one with financing.
- How much does a trademark cost at OSIM (Romania)
For a trademark filed in Romania, OSIM’s fees differ depending on the type of trademark:
- Verbal mark (without logo), 1 class: 762 lei
- Figurative mark (black and white logo), 1 class: 914 lei
- Figurative mark (color logo), 1 class: 1,676 lei
Subsequently, after the completion of the procedure (approximately 8 months), the following are also paid:
- Trademark certificate issuance fee: 254 lei
If you need protection for more than one product or service:
- Each additional class: 254 lei
- How much does a trademark cost at the EUIPO (European Union)
If you choose protection at European level, the EUIPO fees are:
- 1 class: 850 EUR
- Second class: +50 EUR
- From third class upwards: +150 EUR / class
An important advantage is that an EU trade mark offers protection in all Member States through a single application.
The brand is valid for 10 years and can be renewed indefinitely.
- How much do you pay with SME Fund 2026
First of all, you may be wondering what SME Fund is. This is a European programme that gives SMEs the opportunity to recover a significant part of OSIM or EUIPO fees for the protection of intellectual property.
You can read more about how it works and how to apply in our full guide here.
Through the SME Fund 2026, 75% of OSIM or EUIPO eligible fees for trade marks and designs are reimbursed.
Example of OSIM fees:
Color logo mark, 1 class:
- Initial fee: 1,676 lei
- 75% refund: 1,257 lei
- Actual cost incurred: approximately 419 lei
(to which is later added the certificate fee – 254 lei)
Example of EUIPO fees:
EU trade mark, 1st class:
- Fee: €850
- 75% refund: 637 EUR
- Actual cost incurred: approximately €213
A concrete example: if you have a restaurant and want to expand to several countries in Europe, you can file the trademark for class 43 (public services, restaurants) and you can protect your brand at European level through a single application.
In this case, instead of paying €850, you actually end up incurring a cost of around €213, benefiting from protection in all European Union member states.
- The real difference: without vs. with SME Fund
In practice, the difference is significant:
- at OSIM, the Office’s fees can decrease from over 1,600 lei to a few hundred lei;
- at the EUIPO, the European Office’s fees can decrease from €850 to just over €200.
This discount makes trademark registration much more affordable, including for start-up businesses.
- OSIM or EUIPO: which one do you choose?
Beyond taxes, the choice between national and European protection is related to the business strategy:
- OSIM is suitable if you operate only in Romania;
- The EUIPO is recommended if you sell online, export or have plans to expand to other EU countries.
In many cases, the difference in fees after the application of the SME Fund is no longer so large, which makes the European version much more attractive.
In addition to the OSIM or EUIPO fees, mentioned above, is the fee of the representative in charge of the entire procedure, if you choose to register the trademark through an authorized representative.
Brand registration is not just a legal formality, but an essential step to protect your business, avoid conflicts and strengthen your position in the market.
In 2026, the difference is that this step has become much more accessible through the SME Fund. However, the timing matters: the program works on a first-come, first-served basis, and funds can run out before the end of the year.
In other words, it’s not just a good decision, it’s one worth making on time.
